WHAT IS WRINKLE RELAXING TREATMENT?
It’s a medication which is injected into the muscle to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. It contains a highly purified botulinum-toxin protein. It works by relaxing or paralysing the facial muscles. The treatment lasts approximately 4 months. Optimal results will be visible after 2 weeks and I will make a follow up appointment for this time so we can review your treatment.
WILL IT HURT?
Unfortunately, the treatment may cause minor pain, but we will go slowly and gently to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. No downtime is required after the treatment…you can go about your day!
ISN’T BOTOX A BACTERIA!
Contrary to popular belief, the bacteria that causes botulism (clostridium botulinum) is not part of the treatment, nor are six of the seven neurotoxins it secretes. The only substance used in Botox injections (botulinum toxin ), is carefully extracted, purified, and standardised into approved doses. Plus, the dosage is so small, it can’t get beyond the muscle tissue it’s injected into, meaning there’s little, if any, chance for Botox to reach the bloodstream.
CAN I HAVE BOTOX?
Most adults are eligible for Botox. You must be over 18 and maybe required. The only reasons not to get Botox are if you:
- Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox or to any other botulinum toxin product (Dysport, Xeomin, etc.)
- Have a neuromuscular disorder
- Are being treatmented with certain antibiotics, or other medicines that interfere with neuromuscular transmission
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not known if Botox can harm an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.
- Currently use anticoagulants.
At our Consultation I will discuss all of these with you and if we are ensure I will ask you to
consult with your doctor before getting Botox.
OTHER USES FOR BOTOX
Botox can also be used to relieve excessive sweating. Small doses are injected into the skin blocking the nerve supply to the sweat gland and preventing the production of sweat. This can provide temporary relief from excessive sweating. This can be done in various areas of the body, not just under the arms. It will take approximately a week to start working and can last up to 6 months.
Neck – Nerfertiti Lift
Botox can be used to ‘lift’ the lower jaw line and neck area. The technique involves injections along the lower jaw and down the sides of the neck. The treatment improves the clarity of the jaw line, relaxes the jowls and gives a lifting effect in the neck and jaw area. Treatments normally last 3-4 months.
Facial Slimming Injections
Botox can also be used to make the face appear slimmer. The technique reduces the width of the jaw line for a slimming effect. Results are visible not long after treatment and can last 3-4 months.

What is Botox ®
Botox®, or Botulinum toxin A, is a protein derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking the signal between the last part of the nerve and the muscle that is being targeted, causing the muscle to relax and therefore not function. As the nerve fibres regrow, the function slowly returns.
In fact, Botulinum toxin was first discovered to treat wrinkles as a side-effect of migraine treatments using the product. It has several other medical uses including prevention of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and dystonia (muscular tics and spasms). It is of course best known for being able to reduce wrinkles!
Botox is a brand name and there are other brands such as Dysport and Boccoture. I mainly use Bocouture and achieve exceptional, natural looking results.
How long after treatment does Botox® take effect?
The results are not instant – you will start to notice a reduction in the lines upon movement after 5 – 7 days, with full effects being visible approximately 2 weeks after treatment. There will be a two week review to assess effects of the treatment.
Is “downtime” required following treatment?
Generally speaking, no. There may be some minor swelling and redness noticeable immediately following treatment, this will normally start to diminish after approximately 20 minutes.
How long does it last?
The attraction of this treatment is in part due to the fact that the effects are temporary. On average the effects can last between 2-4 months, with most people noticing lines reappearing after approximately 3 months. The longevity of the treatment will depend on your muscle type and activity, which product was used and how much was administered.
In some cases, the continued use of Botox® will result in the need for less frequent treatments. This is due to the fact that nerve endings can eventually start to regrow at a slower pace. This does rely on having regular treatments to begin with, usually once every 3 months.
Who can be treated with Botox®?
Botox® is suitable for people with dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear upon movement of the muscle – such as forehead lines from raising your eyebrows). It is not suitable for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or anyone that has previously had an allergic reaction to the product.
There are some rare neurological conditions that contraindicate the use of Botox®. Also, if you are taking blood thinning medication for cardiovascular reasons, you are more likely to bruise after treatment. Therefore, to ensure that you are suitable, a full medical history is taken at every consultation and prior to any treatment.
This treatment is not recommended for those under 25 years old.
