What is wrinkle relaxing treatment?
It’s a medication injected into the muscle to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. It contains a highly purified botulinum-toxin protein. It works relaxing or paralysing the facial muscles. It will last approximately 4 months for some it will be quicker or longer than this. The treatment may cause minor pain and there is no downtime required. Optimal results will be visible by 2 weeks where you will see be seen again for a review of the treatment.
Contrary to popular belief, the bacteria that causes botulism, clostridium botulinum, is not part of the treatment, nor are six of the seven neurotoxins it secretes. The only substance used in Botox injections, botulinum toxin A, is carefully extracted, purified, and standardised into approved doses. Plus, the dosage is so small, it can’t get beyond the muscle tissue it’s injected into, meaning there’s little if any chance for Botox to reach the bloodstream.
Am I eligible for Botox?
Most adults are eligible for Botox. You must be over 18. ID maybe required. Do not get Botox if you:
- Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox or to any other botulinum toxin product (Dysport, Xeomin, etc.)
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Treatment with certain antibiotics, or other medicines that interfere with neuromuscular transmission
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not known if Botox can harm an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.
- Current use of anticoagulants, however please discuss with the practitioner first.
If you have other conditions, it is best to consult with your doctor before getting Botox.
Small doses are injected into the skin blocking the nerve supply to the sweat gland preventing the production of sweat. This can provide temporary relief from excessive sweating. It will take approximately a week to start working and can last up to 6 months.
Neck – Nerfertiti lift
A technique which involves injections along the lower jaw line and down the side of the neck. The affect is to improve the jaw line, relax the jowls and provide a lifting effect in the neck and jaw area. Treatments mostly last 3-4 months.
Facial slimming injections
A technique that reduces the width of the jaw line making the face appear slimmer. Results are visible not long after treatment and can last up to 3-4 months.
What is Botox ®
Botox®, or Botulinum toxin A, is a protein derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking the signal between the last part of the nerve and the muscle that is being targeted, causing the muscle to relax and therefore not function. As the nerve fibres regrow, the function slowly returns.
In fact, Botulinum toxin was first discovered to treat wrinkles as a side-effect of migraine treatments using the product. It has several other medical uses including prevention of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and dystonia (muscular tics and spasms). It is of course best known for being able to reduce wrinkles!
Botox is a brand name and there are other brands such as Dysport and Boccoture. I mainly use Bocouture and achieve exceptional, natural looking results.
How long after treatment does Botox® take effect?
The results are not instant – you will start to notice a reduction in the lines upon movement after 5 – 7 days, with full effects being visible approximately 2 weeks after treatment. There will be a two week review to assess effects of the treatment.
Is “downtime” required following treatment?
Generally speaking, no. There may be some minor swelling and redness noticeable immediately following treatment, this will normally start to diminish after approximately 20 minutes.
How long does it last?
The attraction of this treatment is in part due to the fact that the effects are temporary. On average the effects can last between 2-4 months, with most people noticing lines reappearing after approximately 3 months. The longevity of the treatment will depend on your muscle type and activity, which product was used and how much was administered.
In some cases, the continued use of Botox® will result in the need for less frequent treatments. This is due to the fact that nerve endings can eventually start to regrow at a slower pace. This does rely on having regular treatments to begin with, usually once every 3 months.
Who can be treated with Botox®?
Botox® is suitable for people with dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear upon movement of the muscle – such as forehead lines from raising your eyebrows). It is not suitable for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or anyone that has previously had an allergic reaction to the product.
There are some rare neurological conditions that contraindicate the use of Botox®. Also, if you are taking blood thinning medication for cardiovascular reasons, you are more likely to bruise after treatment. Therefore, to ensure that you are suitable, a full medical history is taken at every consultation and prior to any treatment.
This treatment is not recommended for those under 25 years old.
